Putting fathers back in families

Locally, it's B-H-K Child Development and they're helping to make a difference by offering regular Father's Group meetings in Houghton, Baraga and Keweenaw counties.

"We designed this program especially for fathers to help them cope with issues in an open, comfortable and confidential environment," Mark Cavis, Father's Group facilitator, said. "It's a way for them to gather together to vent or to discuss a particular issue, while others listen and give advice. Nobody at anytime is put in the spotlight."

Since B-H-K originated in 1974, the non-profit organization has grown to include a wide variety of services on top of its cornerstone programs, which include Head Start, preschool and childcare.

B-H-K's Father's Group program, now in its fifth year, offers support and guidance to fathers from all walks of life within the three-county area.

"As an individual and as a father, it's comforting to know that I'm not alone out there and the fathers who participate see that they aren't alone as well," Cavis said. "They have the opportunity to brainstorm while at the same time, help each other out."
